ER1: José Luis Gasch

Dr. José L. Gasch-Tomás has joined the team of historians at Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Científicas (CSIC) as an Experienced Researcher (ER1) in the context of the ForSeaDiscovery project in December 2014. He has recently got his PhD in History from the European University Institute (EUI) of Florence, Italy. His thesis, whose title is “Global Trade, Circulation and Consumption of Asian Goods in the Atlantic World. The Manila Galleons and the Social Elites of Mexico and Seville (1580-1640)”, has been the result of an interdisciplinary work which involved the combining of methods and techniques from economic history, social history, and cultural history. In the research he developed previously to joining the ForSeaDiscovery project, Gasch-Tomás has studied trade across the Manila Galleon and the commoditisation and formation of a market of Asian goods in the Spanish empire during the late sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. The main findings of his research are conceived as a contribution to the most recent trends in the history of globalisation and global trade in preindustrial times. He has published some of his results in prestigious scientific journals, such as Revista de Historia Económica - Journal of Iberian and Latin American Economic History, and in chapters of collective books published by Palgrave MacMillan, among other publishing houses. In the last years, Gasch-Tomás have presented papers in international congresses and conferences at several universities, such as the University of Bayreuth (Germany), the Max Planck Institute for the History of Science in Berlin (Germany), the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (USA), and the Institute for International and Regional Studies of Princeton University (USA), among others.

Before doing his PhD, Gasch-Tomás carried out the international Masters program (Master’s Degree) “Europe, the Mediterranean World and its Atlantic Diffusion: Methods and Theories for Research, 1492-2000” (Mención de Calidad) at the Universidad Pablo de Olavide of Seville (Spain). He completed his Bachelor’s Degree in History at the Universidad de Castilla-La Mancha (UCLM) in Ciudad Real (Spain). The Ministry of Education of Spain granted him with the “Award for Outstanding Achievement in the degree of History” for obtaining the highest academic record of all Spanish universities in the degree of History, class group of 2002-2007.
